First of all, where can this
particular error “Cartridge Memory Tag Missing” appear? It is generally displayed
in the Toolbox Software of your HP printers. If you’re familiar with using this
software, the issue can be found from the supplies status page. From there
you’ll find the Error 10100 which indicates that the machine was not able to
read the cartridge’s data.
There is of course a solution or
rather solutions, but will depend on the root cause of the error. If you’re
very certain that HP Q5949A toner cartridge caused this
failure, then you will have to remove and re-install it back properly. Maybe
the installation was a little slack such that the memory tag and the memory
reader are not making any contact. Or probably, it is the printer’s component
that triggered the error.
Consider performing first the
re-installation procedure to determine whether it is the cartridge or the unit
that caused the problem. This can be done by opening the front cover where you
can access the consumables, remove it from its slot and examine the item. If
it’s a faulty cartridge the printer should display an “Unrecognized Toner
Cartridge” error instead. Hence it is not, so what you should try to do is
remove the orange clip found at its rear end.
That particular clip actually
protects the memory chip of the cartridge which is in paired with the memory
reader from the machine. It also serves as the security which locks the two
components when making contact. You only remove it to test if the problem is
from the cartridge, and confirm that it is not damaged. Re-install it back to
the printer and see if the error reappears.
If the provided solution above
was not able to get rid of the problem, then let’s try working with the memory
reader. Look closely to the cartridge slot, find the memory controller/reader
and see if it’s in a good condition. You may clean it as well using proper
cleaning materials or tools to remove any dirt.
Once done cleaning, re-install
the cartridge and restart the printer. See if the error status still occurs,
and if it does, try using a reserve cartridge or a new one. Install the new
replacement and reset the unit by unplugging it from the power source for
10-15minutes, turn it back on and see if the problem was fixed.
Through these simple solutions
you can troubleshoot your own printer without the need to call HP Support,
given that you solved the error. If not, then perhaps it wouldn’t hurt if you
ask for a support once in a while, since it is your right to be served as a
customer.
