What Is the Difference Between Brother TN420 and TN450 Toner Cartridges?
Generally speaking, these two cartridges support the same range of laser printer models from Brother. Each can be distinguished via their rated page-yield since the TN450 is intended for high-volume printing while the TN420 is suitable for low-volume.

The expected lifetime yield of Brother TN450 is up to 2600 pages, that is approximately its capacity in accordance with the ISO/IEC 19752 and based on 5% coverage. The Brother TN420 on the other hand, has a yield of 1200 pages.

Both serve as replacements for the following printers:

  • DCP Series: 7060D, 7065DN
  • IntelliFax Series: 2840, 2940
  • HL Series: 2220, 2230, 2240, 2240D, 2270DW, 2275DW, 2280DW
  • MFC Series: 7240, 7360N, 7365DN, 7460DN, 7860DW

Their designed and dimension are identical, since these two laser toner cartridges are used interchangeably with any of the printer models listed above. Hence, either you choose to equipped your unit with the Brother TN420 toner cartridge, or the other one, it will surely fit on the slot. One thing that may only differ is probably the replacement slot inside the machine. Since each series has it owns unique build and structure inside. Thus, the manner of installing a replacement may vary from one model to another.

On a side note, remanufactured consumables may have a slight difference in appearance and mass over the original products. However, their dimension and compatibility still remain the same as their counterparts. The advantage of using such products is that they’re generally cheaper and easy to find in most online and local retailers.

Both products can also be returned back to Brother for recycling given that it is empty, used or obsolete. Just to let you know, the manufacturer is not liable to replace an item once returned if in case you accidentally send a cartridge that can still be used or is not empty. They will not also accept products other the ones they sell.

Overall, the difference between these two replacements is simply their approximated page-yield. This information is practically useful for offices that rely heavily on printing. Knowing that a high-yield toner can support high-volume printing over a standard or low-yield cartridge, it saves you time and money from buying the inappropriate supply for your printer.
