It terms of bundled features, the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401 laser monochrome printer is a considerable unit for medium to large-size businesses and workgroups. Those with a bit of a tight budget but would like to get a taste of HP’s latest printing technology could probably afford to have this printer. It’s a competitive unit with well-packed functionality and useful stuffs to offer.

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401 series is available in three models which include the M401N, M401DN and M401DW. If you’re managing a small business or just in a home office, the HP M401 can be a reliable monochrome laser printer, ignoring its quite high running cost. Compared with competing devices that offer lower cost-per-page at approximately 1.8 cents-per-page over this printer’s 2.8 rating, you might probably find it an issue. However, this printer only needs one supply and that is a black HP CF280X toner cartridge. We haven’t mentioned but this unit is rated with an engine speed of 35 pages per minute which beats other competing models with slower ratings.

The unit’s design is well-engineered, and perhaps older models would literally look old when seated right beside the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401 printer. Its elegant built and glossy black coating tells the user that it should have its own workspace, or sounds like it. Kidding aside, its design can probably withstand daily wear while maintaining its office-centric look.

Its bulky dimension is justified by the printer’s paper handling capacity since it holds two trays including a 250-sheet standard input tray plus a 50-sheet multipurpose tray. If a total of 300-sheets wouldn’t make you satisfied, there’s actually an optional 500-sheet tray which you can add to maximize its input limit. This makes the printer flexible to support either a small-sized or medium-sized business.

Direct or wired printing is your only choice since it doesn't include any network features. But if you need such functionality, try checking its two other configuration such as the M401DN or the M401DW models. A little price jump for additional support isn't that bad at all, especially with the one that can do wireless printing.

Standard interfaces include a USB port on the bottom-left side of the printer which enables printing directly from the user’s flash drive or memory key without the need for a host PC. Another note worthy feature of this printer is HP’s Smart Install which takes care of the installation process which is typically done manually by the user. It is just a disadvantage that this particular program is only compatible to work with computers running in Windows OS.
