So you own an HP LaserJet Pro 400 Printer M401 or probably been using one in the office? Unfortunately as you wanted to print an important document, it notified you that it is already low of toner so you automatically freaked out knowing that there’s no extra toner cartridge in the supply room or that you just happened to installed a new cartridge but this printer goes crazy and tells you it is already low of toner. Well, this article will solve this problem and teach you how to print with your HP LaserJet Pro 400 Printer M401 when its toner cartridge is at its estimated end of life.

First of all, let’s identify the printer consumable that your printer is using. HP LaserJet Pro 400 Printer M401 Series uses HP CF280A (HP 80A) Remanufactured Black Laser Toner Cartridge or HP CF280A (HP 80A MICR) MICR Remanufactured Black Laser Toner Cartridge. The following steps below are from HP Solutions Center will change how the printer reacts when supplies reach the Very Low state. Take note that you don't have to re-establish these settings when installing a new toner cartridge.

Enable or Disable the At Very Low Settings (LCD control panel)
  • Step 1 - On the product control panel, press the OK button to open the menus.
  • Step 2 - Open the following menus: (1) System Setup, (2) Supply Settings, (3) Black Cartridge, (4)
    Very Low Setting
  • Step 3 - Select one of the following options: (1) Select the Continue option to set the product to alert you that the toner cartridge is very low, but to continue printing. (2) Select the Stop option to set the product to stop printing until you replace the toner cartridge. (3) Select the Prompt option to set the product to stop printing and prompt you to replace the toner cartridge. You can acknowledge the prompt and continue printing. A customer configurable option on this product is "Prompt to Remind Me in 100 pages, 200 pages, 300 pages, 400 pages, or never." This option is provided as a customer convenience and is not an indication these pages will have acceptable print quality.
